Introducing Our Next Speaker…Andrew Raynes

In this month’s newsletter we are putting a spotlight on one of our speakers, Andrew Raynes.

The Digital Healthcare Show is incredibly excited to be working with a highly talented expert like Andrew, who will be leading the opening session in our ‘Keynote Theatre’ on ‘Avoiding the hype: There’s more to digital maturity than expensive AI’

We are delighted to have Andrew Raynes, CIO, Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as our opening keynote speaker. In his session he will explore ‘shiny-new-object syndrome’ and unravel the importance of holistic transformation in order to achieve genuine digital maturity. Using real-world examples and personal anecdotes, he will demonstrate the fundamentals we need to put into place in order to achieve effective digital change and to become a truly mature organisation.

An Intro to Andrew

Andrew is an executive and CIO at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Andrew joined Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2017 following his former role as IT Programme Director at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Andrew has over 20 years’ experience working in the health and private sectors, including overseas; this includes leading a number of high-profile projects such as the implementation of IT in a GP-led practice at HMP Thameside on the Belmarsh Prison Estate and the implementation of Liquidlogic, a children and adult social care system while at Leicester City Council.

An Acclaimed Digital Pioneer

Amongst his most recent achievements, Andrew led the Trust’s digital transformation programme for the hospital move from Papworth Everard to the new state-of-the-art hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. His team were recognised as a ‘UK first’ to develop interoperability between the Electronic Patient Record systems Lorenzo and Epic after becoming a Lorenzo Digital Exemplar.

He is a member of the National GS1 UK Health Advisory Board and is a CHIME Certified Healthcare Chief Information Officer (CHCIO), a Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS) and Leading Practitioner in the Federation of Informatics Professionals (FedIP). Recognised in the 'CIO Award UK 100' in both 2022 and 2023 (where he was 15th) while also making the global forum CIO 200, Andrew stands among the top minds in digital leadership.

Andrew is also a frequent thought leader with articles published in the New Statesman and keynote at the Health Innovation Conference (HISA) in Johannesburg 2018.  More recently, his award-winning Digital team featured in the hospital’s 2019 CQC report as an area of ‘outstanding practice’ contributing to the Trust’s overall ‘Outstanding’ rating across all domains; a first for any NHS hospital Trust in England.  In 2021 his Digital team won the 2021 HTN Now Award for ‘Rapid response to Covid19’.

Laying Digital Paths for Healthcare’s Future

Andrew’s many years of work driving change at the Royal Papworth was explored in a recent digital report titled ‘Laying Digital Paths for Healthcare’s Future’, which was featured in several leading publications including Technology Magazine, AI Magazine, and Healthcare Digital.

Avoiding the hype

Andrew’s success and acclaim is due to on his views on digital transformation, which can sometimes seem at odds with some of the louder voices in digital. Rather than chasing after the allure of AI and other overhyped cutting-edge technologies, Raynes advocates for a focus on more accurate and impactful metrics of digital maturity, stressing the need for a holistic approach and the establishment of solid foundational principles.

Andrew was recently interviewed on CIO Leadership Live UK Podcast for CIO Magazine, where he reflected on the fundamentals to his success in digital leadership.

It is Andrew’s grounded and pragmatic approach to driving change that makes him the perfect opening keynote speaker for this year’s Digital Healthcare Show, where he will be sharing insights into what really matters when aiming for success with digital projects.

Don’t miss the chance to hear Andrew speak in-person at this year’s Digital Healthcare Show 24-25 April at the ExCeL London.
